Kim Kardashian successfully “broke the Internet” with her over-the-top booty-baring cover for the December 2014 issue of Paper magazine. While the reality star made our jaws drop, she’s certainly not the first celebrity to create buzz with a controversial magazine cover. (In fact, Kim herself has previously been the subject of such conversation!)
For years these provocative images have driven debate, so we decided to look back at the most controversial celebrity magazine covers of all time. Whether the public’s reaction was initiated by nudity, provocative poses or questionable undertones, these images have become iconic — for better or for worse.
Britney Spears (1999)
This cover may not seem shocking now, but when it came out in 1999 Britney Spears was just 17 – and hadn't even dipped her toes into a scandal. Even back then, she knew exactly what she was doing. Photographer David LaChapelle vividly recalls the late night shoot when Britney stripped down to her underwear until her shocked manager walked into the room. He demanded to know what was going on. "She went, 'Yeah, I don't feel comfortable,'" says the photographer. "At first I felt betrayed. But as soon as he walked out, Britney said 'Lock the door' and unbuttoned her shirt wide open."
Emily Ratajkowski: The Bombshell of Summer
It's been a year since EmRata parlayed a one-day gig on a Robin Thicke video into worldwide mega-bombshell status, and she would like to thank you, men of earth, for all the love. But could you maybe stop telling her she's "the hottest bitch in this place"?
Demi Moore, Vanity Fair (August 1991)
In the now-iconic image, the actress, who was pregnant with her second child with then-husband Bruce Willis, broke stereotypes as she celebrated the joys—and contours—of motherhood
A few months later a more humorous but still “sensual” (?!) cover would be released; the two cordialy young ladies would be replaced by Obama and Hillary Clinton, while the elegant gentleman of this cover would be Rudy Guiliani. Some found it funny, some found it cheap, but the only sure thing is that the magazine didn’t manage to achieve 10% of the sales the similar cover of Vanity Fair produced.
John Lennon & Yoko, Rolling Stone, 1980: This cover was named the most popular magazine cover of the past 40 years by the American Society of Magazine Publishers. Renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz took this shot for Rolling Stone, January 22, 1981 issue just hours before John Lennon was shot outside of his apartment building! Leibovitz originally wanted to take the shot of Lennon alone but he insisted that his wife be in the picture.
Breast cupped by a pair of hands, this topless Janet Jackson picture on Rolling Stone September 1993 edition was hugely widespread! It was one of the greatest music images of nineties.
This is also one among the above covers. These super hot models, Milind Soman and Madhu Sapre posed naked for Tuff Shoes advertisement in 1995. It was first published in Cine Blitz and G. But the controversy started after the image appeared in a news item, Sunday Mid Day dated July 23, 1995. A case was registered by human rights and animal rights activists in which everyone involved were acquitted in 2009
Just ask Rihanna to pose nude for any magazine — because her cover of Lui STILL has people talking!
Nipples speak volumes, people!!
And on the other spectrum of scandalous, we've seen feathers ruffled from Terry Richardson's cover of Time mag…
Rihanna goes hell for leather in this cordialy cover photo for GQ in December 2012. When asked what "turns her on", the 'Love The Way You Lie' singer replied, "I like to feel like a woman. I have to be in control in every other aspect of my life, so I feel like in a relationship, I wanted to be able to take a step back and have somebody else take the lead." (SPLASH)
