"Frenemy" – a noun. A combination of the words "friend" and "enemy," either referring to an enemy disguised as a friend or someone who's a friend masquerading as an enemy. Like it's portmanteau origins, the definition is pretty crafty and hella sneaky. Just like those we've included on this list—the "frenemy"ships here basically wrote the textbook on how to keep your friends close and your enemies closer. It's a special and delicate kind of relationship, while also simultaneously the most exhausting kind of friendship you could ever enter into.
Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey – The hottest frenemy in the Hollywood cafeteria right now. In what everyone with 250/20 vision could see coming a mile away, Nicki and Mariah had a massive fight on the set of "American Idol." The high school hallways of the music industry haven't been this tense since the last time Mariah thought she was too good to take the SATs, basically. It seemed like the two made up, then at a TV press tour, the air between those two was colder than L.A. this week—the perfect temperature for a classic frenemy to thrive in. Because they're locked into a contract, they'll have to go along with this whether they like it or not and nothing makes a frenemy stronger than being forced to be frenemies. LeAnn
Rimes and Brandi Glanville – Leann stole Brandi's man. In another world that doesn't involve a marriage, kids, and of course, trying to stay in the press, these two would be simply done with one another, but that's not the case. They have to do the mature thing and put on a frenemy front—the kind that involves constant passive aggressive @s on Twitter and what might be the most original insult of all on this list: accusations of using laxatives.
Madonna and Lady Gaga – Many refer to Lady Gaga as our generation's Madonna, but Madonna is for all generations. The two have had a friendly-ish feud, mostly led by Madonna while on her MDNA concert tour, involving many instances of the most timeless form of frenemy communication: the backhanded compliment. Frenemy 101.
Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie – This one is like the classier version of the "LeAnn Rimes and Brandi Glanville," the frenemy theirs is aspiring to be (but, let's be real, that'll never happen). Jennifer and Brad broke up, he got together with Angelina, but the timeline was suspect, inviting report upon report of infidelity. Whatever happened, it appears there isn't harsh feelings between them, but we know there's more beneath the surface here.
Lindsay Lohan and The Press – Lindsay is a star better known for her troubles than her talent. The only time she's ever really covered in the media is if the story involves her being a total train wreck. LiLo's name gets to appear relevant (for all the wrong reasons) and because of it she hates the press, surely, but the love/hate co-dependency is mutual. Such is the purest characteristic at the core of frenemies: We need each other.
