There was panic in some parts of Abuja on Tuesday following reports of an explosion in Emab Shopping Complex in Lokongama area of the Federal Capital Territory.
PUNCH learnt that the explosion emanated from the compressor of an airconditioning unit in a laundry shop in the complex around 2a.m.
The compressor reportedly exploded, leading to a fire in the shop.
Fire fighters and policemen rushed to the scene and swiftly put out the fire.
Spokesmen of the police and State Security Service confirmed the incident and denied that the explosion was caused by a bomb.
Abuja has witnessed a number of bomb explosions in the last two years.
Places hit include the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force; the headquarters of the United Nations System in Nigeria; ThisDay Newspapers office; a night club; some churches; the mammy markets of a barracks; some churches; and a spot near Eagle Square.
All the incidents have led to deaths and destruction of property.
