Most Rev. Alfred Martins, Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, on Monday frowned at the display of wealth by some public office holders.
Martins, who stated this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos, also decried their lack of accountability and disregard for the rule of law.
He said that such acts were unethical and detrimental to the harmonious growth and development of the nation.
The archbishop urged Nigerian leaders to emulate Jesus Christ by serving humanity.
“There is the need for the country’s leaders to reflect on the responsibility that comes with their offices and imbibe the selfless attributes of Christ by being responsive to the yearnings of the masses.
“The true essence of leadership comes through love and selfless service, that should be a hallmark for our country’s leaders,” he said.
Speaking on the state of insecurity in the country, Martins urged the government to dialogue with the sect to ensure a lasting peace.
“My advice to the government is that whatever needs to be done, whoever needs to be spoken to, even if it means dialoguing, let them dialogue with them.
“At the same time keeping the options of using the states to fish out perpetrators of the crime,” he said.
On the issue of purchase of private jets by some church leaders, the cleric said, “We should ask ourselves, will Christ do this, will He take the path?” he asked.
On the high rate of unemployment among youths, he stressed the need for the youths to be developed and managed properly in order to enhance the social, economic and political advancement of the nation.
“To achieve the complete development of the youth in terms of giving them quality education, good healthcare, social security, their participation must be guaranteed,” he said.
He urged the government to empower the youth to be self-reliant to enable them to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.
