Proper management of the available resources is the best way to optimize the use of that resource and to leave the remnants for the coming generation. Such a policy is now being given much importance in emerging economies like that of the UAE. Even the available land areas are put to the best use and thus when a home owner intends to put up his house for sale in, the buyer will use the entire available useful building construction materials that can be harvested from the present structure if he wants to build a new home from the scratch.
In some of the countries in Latin America, the forest produce was considered as the privilege of the poor. Thus, the common people were allowed to cut down trees for house building and other purposes. Commercial considerations were given more precedence without caring for the environmental degradation. Wood was more often used for fuel and thus to keep the daily kitchen fire going, more and more wood resource was needed.
Timber had a lot of uses in earlier times and when there was a glut or when timber was available in plenty its cost was low but as of now, it has become a scarce commodity and thus its costs has gone up phenomenally. Not only that, it will take years to replenish what has been taken out. Such a situation could have been avoided if proper measures to address the issue could have been made a part of the government decision making with respect to environment management.
